Many children are lucky to have had a special teacher that stands out for their ability to guide them, teach them lifelong lessons or spark an interest that would burn throughout their lives urging them to be outstanding people. I was one of those lucky children and that teacher was Mrs. Giles. She was my sixth-grade teacher at Cowan Avenue Elementary School in L.A.
Mrs. Giles was one of those teachers that deeply touched the lives of so many of us. In addition to teaching her class, she oversaw the school Choir which, as you might have guessed, was quite good under her tutelage. She had the remarkable ability to channel the energy of a bunch of silly, giggly 11- and 12-year-olds into creating musical productions, performed for the rest of the school and of course parents. But Mrs. Giles taught more than the basic required subjects She taught us about respect, kindness and open-mindedness and so much more. She provided us with tools that could carry us throughout our lives.
I feel so fortunate to have known Mrs. Giles and was so sorry to hear that she had passed. I will never forget her. Rest in Peace.

Mrs Giles was my absolute favorite teacher in elementary school (Cowan Avenue School)! I was blessed to have been in her class for both 5th and 6th grade. She led the choir and - as her obituary so aptly states - she had a voice that filled the room with beauty and grace. I believe I still have the album with her singing, "You'll Never Walk Alone!"
In fact, hearing that song today is what brought me (sadly) to this page. As we say in my tradition, may her memory be forever a blessing to those who knew and loved her.

I just learned of this precious soul's having transitioned to her heavenly abode. Malvie had that dynamic spirit that could welcome anyone, and make you feel so special. She was indeed a great mentor for me. When she last visited Knoxville, I went to pick her up and she stayed at our home here in Oak Ridge and sang at our church that Sunday night, and she was such a blessing to all who heard her, and who came to know her. RIP Beloved!

My heart was saddened when I heard of the passing of this lovely lady. My thoughts of Sis. Giles go back to when we both worked with the Columbia District Choir. My prayers are with her family.

Mrs. Giles was a woman of Faith. She served God, her fellowman, church and community without wavering. No matter the task, she put her all and all. She exemplified the real meaning of a "Christian" in her works and deeds. Her beautiful voice have been quiet for a long time, but oh how she is now singing without ceasing in that heavenly choir. Rest in the arms of your Savior. As the song says, "Free at last, Free at last, thank God almighty she is free at last".

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Giles, however, I know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. There is not a doubt in my mind that she is directing the heavenly choir. If you spent any time in her presence, you could feel her strength, her character and her faith in her words, her music and her songs. We are all the better for having know her. She challenged you. She questioned you and her ministry will be missed. She was a true woman of God.

I met Mrs. Giles when I was a student and she was a substitute teacher at Walker School. We forged a friendship and a mentorship relationship on into and beyond my college days at GSU.
She was a very nice and compassionate lady who showed agape love to everyone.
I will cherish so many fond memories I have of her with me and my family.

I send my deepest sympathy and condolence to the family of Dr. Malvie Lee Giles. Our church family has truly suffered a loss, (Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church)I visited with her on October 21 st but she was asleep and I whispered a prayer, watched her for awhile, visited her roommate and quietly left the room, not knowing that would be my last time to see her. Take your rest Mrs. Giles , task on earth completed. Love you dearly. Sister Tucker-Caldwell, Ashley Tucker Bean and little Madison Bean.

My prayers are with the entire family and friends of Dr. Giles. I had the honor of playing for her several times and each time I was simply overwhelmed by her wonderful anointed voice with a personality that equally matched. She will be greatly missed but highly remembered. A TRUE LEGEND OF SOUTHERN ARKANSAS.
